- The Discovery Zone brings together educational exhibits, the Kids Zoo, Goat World and Splash Island.
- See great horned owls, rabbits and guinea pigs at the Kids Zoo.
- Watch domestic goats in Goat World’s large paddock.
- Explore Splash Island’s water play area, themed around Canadian water and aquatic animals.
Tips for your visit
- The zoo has about 10 kilometres of walking paths.
- The Indo-Malaya area combines two pavilions with outdoor exhibits.
- The African Savanna and African Rainforest Pavilion occupy most of the zoo’s southern third.
- You can reach the Africa section only through Indo-Malaya or the Americas.
- A Zoomobile uses rubber-tired trams around the zoo; some Eurasia Wilds species can be seen only from it.

History
Hugh A. Crothers and John Cameron Egan founded the zoo; Egan was the first society chair.
- 1888Riverdale Zoo opened on about three hectares.
- 1963–1970A new zoo was proposed, planned and built; the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Society formed in 1966.
- 1974The new zoo opened on August 15, replacing Riverdale’s cage-based displays with naturalistic habitats.
- 1976–1994The Canadian Domain Ride served the Rouge Valley until a train collision ended its operation.
- 1998The African Savanna opened as the zoo’s largest expansion to that point.

- 2011A black-footed penguin exhibit opened in a former seal habitat.

How to get there
- On footThe zoo is about 20 kilometres northeast of Toronto’s city centre, beside the Rouge River.
Accessibility
- Wheelchair access All pavilions are wheelchair accessible, but the grounds have steep slopes. The steep hill to the Canadian Domain is not recommended for wheelchair users or people using electric scooters.
- Wheelchairs Free wheelchairs are provided.
- Accessible parking Accessible parking spaces are available.
- Theatre seating Wheelchair spaces are reserved in Waterside Theatre.
- Ride seating Accessible seats are available on the Zoomobile and carousel rides.
- Sensory maps Maps mark headphone zones and quiet areas.
- Sensory bags A rental station is just inside the main entrance. Bags include noise-reducing headphones, sunglasses, fidget toys and visual cue cards.
- Visual activity guides MagnusCards provides guides for autistic and neurodiverse visitors.
- Access2 The zoo participates in Access2 for visitors with disabilities who need an attendant.
