History
A group from Basel’s cultural-space movement took over the building in the late 1990s and made it available as a public centre. The building originally featured ornate late-classical and neo-Baroque details.
- 1912The building was constructed for Schweizerische Volksbank and originally served as its headquarters.
- 1919The building was expanded.
- 1970sA major modernization removed the original Baroque details from the exterior and interiors.
- 1998Stiftung Edith Maryon acquired the building, and Georg Hasler, Thomas Tschopp and Daniel Häni founded Unternehmen Mitte there.
- 1999Unternehmen Mitte opened to the public and began its cultural programme. Renovation exposed and restored the original parquet and stone floors.
