History
After Theo van Gogh, an art dealer, died, his widow Johanna van Gogh-Bonger organised the first exhibitions and made the painter known to a wider public. The family then sold the collection to the Dutch state, on one condition: that it be housed in a museum devoted to Van Gogh. Martien van Goor remodelled the main building while Kisho Kurokawa's new wing was built. The 1991 theft was the largest art theft in the Netherlands since the Second World War. Both paintings stolen in 2002 were found again in 2016 in a villa in Italy.
- 1890Van Gogh dies, leaving about 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings to his brother Theo.
- 1960The Vincent van Gogh Foundation is founded and receives the collection.
- 1962The family sells the whole collection to the Dutch state for 15 million guilders.
- 1973The museum opens to the public in Gerrit Rietveld's main building.
- 1991Twenty paintings are stolen, The Potato Eaters among them. All are recovered 35 minutes after the theft, from an abandoned car.
