History

It lay on the seabed for 333 years. Anders Franzén found the wreck in the late 1950s. From 1961 to 1988 the ship was kept in a temporary structure called Wasavarvet, where it was treated with polyethylene glycol. The government decided to have a permanent museum built for the ship. A design competition drew 384 architects who sent in models of their ideas. Marianne Dahlbäck and Göran Månsson won with their design, Ask. Construction took place on and around the dry dock of the old naval yard.
