History
The planned commercial complex covered 1.7 million square feet; Vaughan Mills has nearly 1.3 million square feet of retail space. Ivanhoé Cambridge later sold a 49% stake to LaSalle Investment Management, which took over management and leasing.
- FebruaryThe developers acquired a 180-acre former industrial site at Highway 400 and Rutherford Road.
- May 31The Ontario Municipal Board approved the project.
- JuneConstruction began, three years after the originally planned start.
- November 4The mall opened. It welcomed its two-millionth visitor less than two months later.
- 2013An expansion plan proposed about 150,000 square feet of added floor space and 50 new stores.

- BusOnly York Region Transit routes serve the mall terminal at 1 Bass Pro Mills Drive, near the northeast corridor and the Rutherford Road–Jane Street intersection. Frequent buses connect with Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station, about 2 km south. The terminal has oneRide ticket machines.

Why is it called Vaughan Mills?
The Mills Corporation used “Mills” at the end of its Landmark mall names.
Were the original mills on this site?
No. The name also recalls a saw mill and later a grist mill by the Humber River in the 1830s, far from the present mall.
