History
Heinrich Strack designed the column, built from 1864 to 1873. Its red granite base supports four tapering sandstone drums. It survived World War II with little damage. The column appears in Wim Wenders’ 1987 film Wings of Desire, and its golden statue features in U2’s 1993 “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” video. It became a gathering point for the Love Parade and its closing rally, and is usually included on Berlin’s Pride parade route. On 24 July 2008, presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke here to more than 200,000 listeners.
- 1864Construction began to commemorate Prussia’s victory over Denmark.
- 1873Inaugurated after victories over Austria and France, the column also symbolised the new German Empire.
- 1938–1939The Nazis moved it from Königsplatz, now Platz der Republik, to Großer Stern; a fourth sandstone drum was added.
- 1945The Allies removed the bronze relief panels.
- 1947After debate among the Allies, plans to demolish the column were abandoned and its preservation was confirmed.
