History

Initially known as the green market square, the market later took a name derived from the Latin word for food. Later additions included halls for butchers, tripe and fish, alongside bakery, fruit and flower stalls.

  1. 1807On 2 May, King Maximilian I Joseph ordered part of the grain and farm-goods market moved here from Schrannenplatz, now Marienplatz, because it had become too small.
  2. 1823–1829The market was substantially expanded.
  3. 1852The Schrannenhalle, a forerunner of today’s wholesale market hall, was built at the market’s south end near the old city wall.
  4. 1855The fish market moved to Westenriederstraße.
  5. 1870Permanent stalls began operating; before then, sellers received new pitches each day.
