History

The Clerici family began building the villa in 1690 as a country estate on the lake shore. Antonio Giorgio Clerici completed it in 1745. In 1801 banker and politician Gian Battista Sommariva bought it, renovated it in Directoire style and collected works by Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen. In 1843 Princess Marianna bought the villa. When war broke out, the owners were citizens of enemy states, and the state took control of the villa.
