History
Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio commissioned Pellegrino Tibaldi to design the residence after the convent was demolished. During the cardinal’s lifetime, it welcomed politicians, intellectuals and clergy. Caroline of Brunswick later had the grounds landscaped in the English style and a road built to Como. The property became a hotel in 1873. The grounds host the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este each spring, featuring vintage and concept cars. The Ambrosetti Forum meets there each September, covering politics, finance and industry; it has met annually since 1975.
- 1442Gerardo Landriani founded a women’s convent at the mouth of the Garovo torrent.
- 1565–1570Villa del Garovo and its gardens were built as Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio’s summer residence.
- 1749–1769Jesuits used the villa for spiritual retreats.
- 1815Caroline of Brunswick acquired the villa and had its grounds landscaped in the English style.
- 1860The owner held a costume ball for patriots who had returned to Italy.
