History

Jogaila, Lithuanian Grand Duke and King of Poland, founded the old town on Magdeburg rights. Its buildings developed over many centuries under changing cultural influences, and many authentic buildings from the 14th to the 19th century survive. The old town was once encircled by defensive walls. Baroque is the dominant style, and most sacred buildings were erected in that period. Some Orthodox churches here are built in the local Gothic style. The buildings span Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and classicist styles.
