History

Since the last ice age, nature kept the wild gorge to itself for more than 10,000 years. Until 1890 it was mostly closed off, except at two points on the Radovna. Locals joined forces to oppose damming the gorge for a hydroelectric plant. A hydroelectric dam was built below the gorge.

  1. Before the last ice ageA glacier dammed the Radovna, which had flowed east; the lake then cut a new path through soft Triassic limestone.
  2. 1891Jakob Žumer, mayor of Gorje, and Benedikt Lergetporer, a mapmaker and photographer from Bled, discover the gorge by chance at very low water.
  3. 1891–1893The two men spend two years preparing the gorge for public visits.
  4. 1893The gorge opens to visitors, with over 500 m of wooden bridges and galleries fixed into the rock.
  5. LaterFloods repeatedly washed away the wooden walkways, so they now sit higher. The walkways have been renovated several times since they were built.
