History
Around 1919, the building housed a library, cinema, bathhouse, two restaurants, a hairdresser and a shoe shop. The public baths closed in 1972.
- 1893The original Volkshaus opened as Switzerland’s oldest Volkshaus and a meeting place for organized workers in Bern.
- 1914Architect Otto Ingold’s new reinforced-concrete building opened, replacing the earlier hall.
- 1915Lenin met Bolshevik delegates in February. In September, Lenin and socialists from warring countries met at Zeughausgasse. An international socialist women’s and youth conference also took place here.
- 1918The Olten Action Committee called for a protest strike here, preceding the nationwide general strike.
- late 1970sMost of the 1914 building was demolished. The Zeughausgasse façade and the oriel building above Schützengässchen survived.
