History

Successive beacons guided ships here for centuries before the present tower was built.

  1. 1358A raised fire basket on a wooden frame served as Warnemünde’s first documented beacon.
  2. 1487A duke had the earlier beacon and its defenses destroyed during a conflict with Rostock.
  3. 1582A drawing in the Vicke-Schorler-Rolle showed the old light tower near the present lighthouse site.
  4. 1588A rebuilt beacon used 12 candles inside a glazed metal cage.
  5. 1836A petroleum lamp on a brick base replaced the earlier beacon.

  2. 1863–1897The lighthouse plan was approved in 1863, but funding disagreements delayed construction until work began in 1897. Karl Friedrich Kerner led the project.
  3. 1898The lighthouse entered service on 19 October, marking the channel entrance to Rostock.
  4. 1911–1917An incandescent mantle burner increased the light’s range eightfold in 1911; gas lighting followed in 1917.
  5. 1949–1993Structural cracks were discovered in 1949. Partial repairs followed in 1969, with major restoration in the 1980s through 1993; tourist climbs were suspended from 1979 until the 1993 reopening.
  6. 1978The lighthouse became automated, with operation transferred to the control centre in Hohe Düne.
  7. 2008The lighthouse appeared on a German commemorative postage stamp.
