History

The Ghermezian family bought the Summerlea site in the mid-1970s, envisioning a complex that combined shopping with large entertainment facilities.

  1. 1959The Ghermezian family emigrated from Iran to Canada; the family later conceived the mall.
  2. 1965Jacob Ghermezian and his brothers founded Ghermez Developments, Ltd.
  3. 1979Construction began after the city approved zoning changes and land swaps.
  4. 1981The first section opened on September 15, with about 220 shops and several restaurants.
  5. 1983The second section added an ice rink, Galaxyland and about 240 shops.

  3. 2004A major storm damaged parts of the mall; repairs followed promptly.

Tickets can be bought through the mall’s website. A two-day pass covers participating parks and attractions, with one entry per day at each except Galaxyland.

The mall is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00–21:00, and Sunday, 11:00–18:00.
