History

Imperial Arcade was demolished during redevelopment, while Skygarden and Westfield Centrepoint were refurbished and merged into Westfield Sydney. Across Pitt Street Mall, Sydney Central Plaza became an extension of Westfield Sydney.

  1. 1891–1961Imperial Arcade, designed by Thomas Rowe, opened in 1891 and was demolished in 1961.
  2. 1965A replacement Imperial Arcade opened with four shopping levels and offices above. Stocks and Holdings Ltd, now Stockland, developed it.
  3. 1988Skygarden opened beneath Skygarden Tower, behind two heritage-listed buildings. It had seven retail and restaurant levels and a food court beneath a glazed roof.
  4. 1998Sydney Central Plaza opened in the former Farmer & Company building, built in 1874, after refurbishment of the flagship Myer store.
  5. 2009Redevelopment began on 4 July across Westfield Centrepoint, Skygarden, Imperial Arcade and Sydney Central Plaza.

  1. 2010–2011The first stage opened in October 2010 with about 130 specialty stores. The second added 120 stores from November 2010 through late 2011.
  2. 2012A 25-storey commercial tower at 85 Castlereagh Street marked the project’s completion in early 2012.
