History

1935Noorder Dierenpark was founded by Willem Oosting as a private zoo.
1970sThe Oosting and Rensen families expanded the predecessor zoo into a science-focused institution.
1990sThe zoo moved from Hoofdstraat to Noordbargeres after it ran out of room to expand.
2006The zoo and Emmen agreed to develop a new kind of park at Noordbargeres.
2013Construction of the new park began.

2021Rimbula entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest indoor rainforest in a zoo.
