There are two playgrounds: Waldspielplatz Märchenburg at the main entrance on Koburger Straße and Märchenspielplatz behind the Russian tea house.

Refreshments are available at the tea house in the Russian log house, the park restaurant and a snack stand.

History

It was intended as an additional attraction, but day-trippers repeatedly disturbed the animals.

1904Mill owner Richard Jacob gave Leipzig’s city council four fallow deer, prompting an enclosure at Stempel.
1906Flooding made the first site unsuitable, so the animals moved to fenced land near Heidaer Wiesen.
1912–1922A shelter opened in 1912; a park restaurant followed in 1922.
1930sThe city provided neighboring land for a silver fox experimental farm. It was meant to add an attraction, but day-trippers disturbed the animals.
Second World WarThe park and restaurant were destroyed. At the war’s end, enclosures were opened to protect the animals from attacks.

1972Leipzig’s city assembly approved a new wildlife park on the former enclosure grounds.
1974Park construction began on 1 January. Restaurant construction began beside Hakenteich, designed by Winfried Sziegoleit and Volker Sieg.
1979The completed park opened in October at its present size.
