History
North of Strandhalle, the early zoo had enclosures, aviaries, heated houses, pools and seawater aquariums. Polar bear Irka arrived from Canada and lived at the zoo for the rest of her life. Two seal pups, Luna and Paula, were born to different mothers on consecutive July days.

- 24 June 1928The zoo opened outside the Weser embankment as Tiergrotten.
- 1962The February North Sea flood partly inundated the zoo and killed many animals.
- 1976Major renovations took place.
- 2000–2004The zoo closed in 2000 for a complete redesign and reopened on 27 March 2004 as Zoo am Meer, with naturalistic surroundings.
