History

Bombing damaged the zoo and destroyed the aquarium in 1943.

  1. 1844Zoo Berlin was founded. Frederick William IV donated its first animals from Pfaueninsel and the Tiergarten pheasantry.
  2. 1878The zoo hosted the “Nubian Caravan,” its first human exhibition, organized by Carl Hagenbeck.
  3. 1878–1932The zoo held 25 human exhibitions.
  4. 1881Kawesqar people were forcibly exhibited in the Ostrich House for about five weeks. Rudolf Virchow examined ten of them and presented his findings on November 14.
  5. 1913The aquarium opened.

  1. 1938Jewish board members were removed, and Jewish shareholders were forced to sell their shares at a loss.
  2. 1939Jewish visitors were barred from the zoo.
  3. 1941Allied bombs hit the zoo.
  4. 1943A direct hit in November destroyed the aquarium building.
  5. 1945A count on May 31 found that only 91 of 3,715 animals had survived.
  6. After World War IIThe zoo and aquarium were rebuilt with animal settings resembling natural habitats.
  7. 1974Gorilla Fatou gave birth to Dufte, the first gorilla raised in Berlin.
  8. 1995–2007Panda Yan Yan lived at the zoo from 1995 until her death in 2007.
  9. 2006Polar bear Knut was born at the zoo and raised by keeper Thomas Dörflein after his mother rejected him.
  10. 2009A woman who entered the polar bear enclosure was mauled but survived.
  11. 2011Polar bear Knut died.
  12. 2012Bao Bao, a male panda who arrived in 1979, died.
