History

Members of a poultry-breeding association began working towards a zoo in 1861, proposing a bird park with mammal exhibits. The first garden area was created in 1877, followed by a rose garden in 1899 with 3,600 plants in 800 varieties. Construction of the Japanese Garden began in 1918 on the old rose garden’s site.

  1. 1864Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden provided land, Lake Ludwig and animals from his collection for a proposed zoo.
  2. 1865The zoo opened, making it one of Germany’s oldest.
  3. 1877The grounds, animal facilities and inventory became municipal property.
  4. 1893An artificial hill with a high reservoir was completed in June. It became Lauterberg.
  5. 1913Sea lions moved to an outdoor enclosure, now the zoo’s oldest surviving animal facility.
Show all
  1. Second World WarWar damage led to surviving animals being transferred to other zoos. The grounds were used to grow vegetables.
  2. 1947–1949Reconstruction began in 1947, and the zoo and city garden reopened in 1949.
  3. 1965Tierpark Oberwald was established to free space for garden areas.
  4. 2015For its 150th anniversary, the zoo added the Himalayan mountain world, a coati habitat and the Exotic House.
  5. May 2022Lion keeping ended after the death of the last lioness.
