History
Heini Hediger directed it from 1954 to 1973. A development programme launched in 1992 set plans through 2030.

- 1992A renovation and expansion programme began, with development planned through 2030. Its plan proposed doubling the zoo’s area by 2020 without increasing the species count, replacing individual-animal displays with ecosystems and retreats hidden from visitors.
- 2005After acquiring seven lemurs thought to be mouse lemurs, the zoo identified a new species later named the Goodman mouse lemur.
