About

Wajda’s first film is set in Warsaw, 1942 and concerns a young man much like himself, living in squalor and doing his best to disrupt the German Occupation, eventually falling in with a Communist-leaning Resistance cell. Influenced by the Italian neo-realists and noir-tinged expressionism, Wajda preferred to use real locations whenever possible. In fact, the machine guns in the film shot real bullets, and legend has it this was the first film to use blood squibs to simulate the impact of bullets.
