About

HIFF is honored to present the World Premiere of THE NAVIGATOR as its Opening Night film. Nearly 50 years after becoming the first Native Hawaiian in six centuries to navigate from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti without modern instruments, Nainoa Thompson returns to the open ocean for one final voyage. With a crew of student navigators, he sails 2,400 miles guided by stars, nature, and the teachings of master navigator Mau Piailug. This is a journey of legacy, discovery, and connection—preserving ancient knowledge for generations to come.
