In 1445, residents of Aran, Chatagny and Grandvaux helped strengthen the fortifications in return for shelter within the castle grounds.

Histoire
During the later conversion, Mercier cleared the ruins but retained and modernised the surviving tower. With architect Francis Isoz, he built the neo-Gothic hotel from 1889 to 1893.
- c. 1170A tower was built on the lakeshore for the Bishop of Lausanne.
- 13th c.The tower became a fortified residence for bishops.
- c. 1283The tower was expanded with a curtain wall and service buildings.
- early 14th c.A great hall was documented in the palace and tower.
- 1536After Bernese forces conquered Vaud, the castle served as a prison.

- 1885The canton of Vaud sold part of the estate to Jean-Jacques Mercier.
- 1889–1893Mercier and architect Francis Isoz rebuilt the site as a neo-Gothic hotel, retaining and modernising the surviving tower.
