He worked for over 30 years at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) as a presenter, program producer, and department head. He writes Salzburg crime novels featuring the charismatic investigator Martin Merana. Characters and themes from Baumann's novels serve as inspiration for the following TV crime dramas on ORF and ZDF: Drachenjungfrau, Das dunkle Paradies, and Flammenmädchen.
