History
- After 1356A high defensive wall and protective moat were built around Basel and its suburbs after the earthquake.
- 1387Spalen Gate was first documented; it was completed around 1400.
- 1473–1474Jakob Sarbach directed construction of a low outer gate. The entrance originally crossed the moat by drawbridge.
- 1842A storm destroyed the flanking towers’ flat tent roofs.
- Late 19th centuryThe surrounding city wall and most of its towers were demolished.
