História

Built to protect Habsburg territory and control a strategic point on the Aare, the castle later became an Effinger family estate and eventually a museum. A canton-established foundation took over the castle, and Museum Aargau assumed museum operations.

  1. First half of the 13th centuryHabsburg retainers built the castle to protect Eigenamt and control a strategic point on the Aare.
  2. 1242The castle was first recorded and was home to the Truchsessen of Habsburg and Wildegg.
  3. 1437Peter von Gryffensee bought the castle from the Hallwyl family.
  4. 1552Lightning caused a fire that left only the masonry. The castle became habitable again over several years.
  5. 1825The Erlachhaus was built beside the castle.

  2. By 1917Eduard Vischer had led repairs and prepared the castle for museum use.
